Why do I need a

VHF Marine Radio Licence?

There are 2 important reasons why a VHF Marine Radio Licence is required.

Firstly, and the most important, is that a Marine Radio is a primary safety device on board a vessel. A Marine Radio gives vessels the ability to contact multiple vessels in their vicinity at the same time.  When the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) component of the Marine Radio is used then this adds an automated process to marine communications.

Secondly, Marine Radios are used by both Recreationand and Commercial vessel operators using the same frequencies and channels.  With this in mind it is easy understand why it is important to have the knowledge below that ensures everyone is operating Marine Radios in the same way:

  • Knowledge of MF/HF and VHF marine radios
  • Identify the difference between Ship Stations, Coast Radio Stations and Limited Coast Stations
  • Understand and use the ‘Phonetic Alphabet’
  • Use correct operating procedures and channels when operating a marine radio
  • Understand Distress, Urgency and Safety Communications
  • Understand Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Communications
  • Understand the use of 406 MHz EPIRBS
  • Understand the use of SART’s
  • Understand Search and Rescue in Australia
  • Identify the different types of radio equipment, their application and limitations
  • Identify the components of a marine radio and the care and maintenance required with radio equipment and power sources

Who issues the Marine Radio Licence?

The VHF Marine Radio Licence is issued by the Office of Maritime Communications, which is part of the Australian Maritime College, based on Launceston, Tas. The Marine Radio Licence is Internationally Recognised and is a mandatory requirement if you are hiring a yacht in the EU.

We can also conduct the Marine Radio Licence exam if you are overseas.
