A person in the water can disappear behind a wave surprisingly quickly. Once the initial alarm has been raised, the job is no longer simply to steer around and look. Search and rescue patterns give a vessel a disciplined method for covering water, maintaining a proper lookout and giving the casualty the best possible chance of being found.
For Coxswain and Master candidates, this is an area where assessors often look beyond a memorised diagram. They want to know how you would choose a pattern, establish a datum, account for wind and tide, brief the crew and alter the plan when the facts change. That is exactly how it works in a real emergency.
Why search and rescue patterns matter
A search pattern is a planned track that allows one or more search units to examine an area systematically. It prevents the common and dangerous response of repeatedly returning to the last reported position without considering how far the person, vessel or debris may have drifted.
The starting point is usually the datum. This is the most probable position of the search object at a specified time. It may be based on a witnessed position, a GPS report, a distress call, a last known position or calculated drift. A datum is not a guarantee. It is the best available starting point, and it must be reviewed as new information arrives.
At sea, a small error can grow quickly. If a person falls overboard unnoticed for 20 minutes in strong tidal flow, the search area may be very different from the vessel’s current position. Wind can affect a person in a lifejacket, a tender, a kayak or floating wreckage differently. Tidal stream, current, leeway, visibility, sea state and the reliability of the original report all affect the plan.
An assessor may give you a scenario with incomplete information for a reason. A capable Master does not pretend certainty where none exists. Explain what you know, what you need to confirm and the conservative action you would take while information is being gathered.
The main search and rescue patterns
The right pattern depends on the size and shape of the search area, the accuracy of the datum, the number of vessels available and the conditions. In an oral assessment, it is better to explain your selection clearly than to recite every pattern without linking it to the situation.
Expanding square search
An expanding square search is commonly used when the datum is reasonably accurate and the search object is likely to be close to it. The vessel starts at the datum and conducts a series of increasing legs, turning 90 degrees each time. The pattern progressively expands outwards.
This is a sensible choice for a person overboard when the position and time of the incident are well established. It concentrates effort near the point of greatest probability before moving further away.
The practical challenge is holding accurate headings and recording the search. In poor visibility, at night or in a fast-flowing area, the planned geometry can quickly become untidy. Good bridge discipline matters: use available navigation equipment, log times and positions, maintain a lookout and avoid becoming so focused on plotting that nobody is actually searching.
Sector search
A sector search is also used when the datum is known with reasonable confidence and the search area is relatively small. The search vessel works outward from the datum on a series of legs, often arranged around a central point. This gives intensive coverage close to the most likely position.
It can be very effective for a small target such as a person in the water, particularly where conditions allow the vessel to make controlled turns and maintain close observation. It is not always the best choice in confined water, heavy traffic or rough conditions where repeated turns may compromise safe vessel handling.
Parallel track search
A parallel track search is used to cover a larger rectangular area. The vessel runs a sequence of parallel tracks, spaced according to visibility, target size, speed and the probability of detection. It is often appropriate where the datum is uncertain or where the search area has been defined by drift calculations and available information.
This pattern demands careful planning. The track spacing must be realistic for the conditions. On a calm, clear day, a larger sweep width may be acceptable. At night, in rain, glare or rough water, a person wearing dark clothing may be difficult to see even at short range. Overly wide track spacing may look efficient on paper but can leave gaps that matter.
With multiple vessels, parallel tracks can provide orderly coverage if everyone is working to the same plan. Clear communications, allocated search legs, reporting points and collision avoidance are essential. A search is not an excuse to neglect the collision regulations or safe speed.
Creeping line search
A creeping line search is useful when the search area is long and narrow, such as along a likely track line, coastline, river channel or drift path. The vessel works repeated legs across the long axis of the area, gradually progressing along it.
For example, if a small vessel has failed to arrive after following a known coastal route, a creeping line search may be more sensible than concentrating effort around one uncertain point. The pattern should reflect the available intelligence, including intended route, fuel endurance, communications history, weather exposure and possible places of refuge.
Planning before the first search leg
The pattern is only one part of a sound response. Before committing the vessel, take control of the immediate emergency. Raise the alarm, keep the casualty or last known position in sight where possible, mark the position, reduce the risk of further people falling overboard and notify the appropriate authorities or coordinating station.
A useful brief gives every person a role. One crew member may maintain a continuous visual lookout, another may record positions and times, while another prepares recovery equipment. On a small vessel, one person may need to perform more than one task, but the Master must make priorities clear.
Your plan should identify the search object, datum time and position, intended pattern, initial course, leg length or track spacing, search speed, communications channel and reporting arrangements. It also needs practical recovery planning. Finding a person is not the end of the emergency. Consider how you will approach, recover, treat and protect them from further injury or hypothermia.
For a person in the water, speed should support detection and safe manoeuvring. Travelling too fast reduces the chance of spotting a head, raised arm or small flotation device among wave tops. Travelling too slowly may delay coverage where a large area must be searched. There is no single perfect speed – it depends on visibility, sea state, vessel handling, crew fatigue and the nature of the target.
What assessors are really testing
When asked about search and rescue patterns, candidates sometimes concentrate only on drawing shapes. The drawing has value, but an assessor is testing operational judgement.
Be ready to explain how you would establish and update a datum, why your selected pattern suits the scenario and what could make it unsuitable. Discuss lookout arrangements, navigation accuracy, radio communications, recording, safe speed and recovery preparations. If another vessel joins the search, explain how you would allocate areas and avoid duplication.
You should also show that you understand the search plan can change. A sighting, floating article, mobile location, updated weather observation or reliable witness statement can shift the probability area. If the casualty is not found, expand the search logically rather than repeating the same tracks without reason.
A calm, structured answer is often stronger than a highly technical answer delivered without a clear sequence. Start with immediate actions, establish the datum, describe the pattern and then explain how you will manage the search and recovery. That approach demonstrates command, not just theory.
Building confidence before your assessment
Search planning is easier to understand when you work through real scenarios on a chart or plotting sheet. Practise a person-overboard scenario with a known datum, then one where the time is uncertain and drift must be considered. Explain your decisions aloud. If you cannot explain why a pattern is appropriate, you are not yet ready to rely on memory alone.
