With the introduction of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) quite a few years ago there were many that belived that traditional methods of coastal navigation and using nautical charts would disappear.
History of course has proven that this is not the case. Using nautical charts and understanding traditional navigational methods is the foundation for navigation and needs to be understood even by those using GPS. GPS is a fantasctic navigation tool. But it must be understood that GPS, like may other electronic methods, is just a tool and is not fail safe. When and if GPS fails then the back up method is, and always will be, the traditional method of using a nautical chart.
Considering the above information, then it can be clearly be seen that anyone who has the responsibility for the safety of a vessel needs to have the basic knowledge and skill to navigate whether it be accorss the lake up along the coast.
As a retired mariner I am now a volunteer rescue boat Captain. Without exception, every vessel that we are required to assist must provide one essential piece of information if we are going to assist them. That is their position! Almost the very first question asked by rescuers is simply ‘Where are you?
Tboat Skippers and Operators provide this information by having basic navigational knowledge and being able to provide their Latitude and Longitude. If the disabled vessel is drifting it is not uncommon for this information to be requested a number of times.
Taking that a step further, prior to retiring recently, I was a maritime Trainer and Assessor who conducted assessments in coastal navigation for candidates seeking to obtain marine qualifications to be the Master of a commercial vessel. As a previous maritime Trainer and Assessor I have conducted many coastal navigation tuition lessons and assessments from all around the world using Zoom or Teams etc.
At Coastal Navigation..it’s Easy were are a little bit different from other Reseller programs. Rather than offering small percentages of commission such as 5-10% we take a different view.

During my time as a Trainer and Assessor I became involved in the development of a coastal navigation training video to which I own the copyright. I have trained 000’s of students using the video. It has saved both myself and my students a great deal of classroom time and I have had great success with student assessment results. Now that I am retired and do not train anymore, maybe the odd tutoring or 2 now and again, I am looking for people to become Registered Resellers for my Coastal Navigation..It’s Easy program.

Secton 1 introduces students to basic information on why it is a requirement for all boat users to have an understanding of traditional navigational methods of using a nautical chart. It also expains how using a nautical chart compliments and aids using additional navigational aids such as radar and GPS.
Section 2 quickly gets the student into coastal navigation by covering a very important starting point in navigation and this is knowing where we are. this section covers co-ordinates, Latitude & Longitude, Degrees and Minutes, A nautical Mile, Charts and Mercator’s Projections, The Compass Rose, It also covers chart information such as Lights, Sounding, Navigational Hazards, Quality of the Seabed, Tidal Information, Coastal Features, Using Parallel Rulers and Protracters and much more!
Section 3 teaches students how to plot positions on a chart, Latitude & Longitude as well as measuring distances correctly in preparation for completing exercises on the topics in sections 1, 2 and 3.
In Section 4 students can put thier knowledge from Sections 1, 2 and 3 into actual practice by completing exercises and activities on their own chart. Answers are give so that the students can check their progress.
In Section 5 the students are taken through the important subjects of variation and Deviation. Topics include the Compass Rose, Memory Aids to assist students to easily conver from True to compass and vice versa. Students also receive examples of converting Variation and Deviation and given the opportunity of completing some exercises.
In Section 6 Students are really starting to build their navigational skills by learning to plot courses and fix their position. They learn about a Rhumb Line, Ded Reckoning, Speed/Time/Distance calculations, Bearings, Chart Symbols for DR, EP and OP and a ‘Cocked Hat’.
Exercises 3, 4 & 5 allow students to complete exercises in plotting courses, applying variation and deviation, calculating speed, time and distance as well as being able to check their individual progress and answers against the correct answers provided.
This section also provides students’ with additional fixing techniques such as a Transit Bearing, Running Fix, 4 Point Bearing and ‘Double the Angle on the Bow’.
In Section 8 we study the importance of understanding the effect of Tides & Currents. We look at phases of the moon and the effect on tide heights, Chart Datum, the Rule of 12th’s in calculating the height of tide at any given time as well as calculating Under Keel Clearance (UKC).
In Section 9 we continue on from Section 8 and the effects of Tide and Currents by expanding the student’s knowledge base by inbtroducing Set & Drift. Here the student will learn not only how to find Set & Drift but also how to apply Set & Drift in determining courses to steer and adjusting vessel speed to make specific arrival times at their destination.
In Section 10 the student now has the opportunity to put what they have learnt so far in Coastal Navigation..It’s Easy! into action and complete exercises covering all the topics covered so far.
In Section 11 we cover the IALA Buoyage System for both areas A and B. For all boat Skippers’ and Masters’ operating in harbours, bays and near coastal areas this is a critical area of knowledge to ensure vessel safety.
In Section 12 the student is now provided to put all the knowledge they have gained from Coastal Navigation..It’s Easy! into action by completing a simulated cruise. They will apply various prepare a passage plan and apply various position fixing techniques as well as to calculate and allow for set and drift in order to stay on track. In addition ‘The Cruise’ wil require the student to make compass conversions and to interpret various symbols identified on the chart.
In Section 13 we look at 2 very popular aids to navigation, the Radar and GPS. This section will give students an introduction to these tools and the opportunity to gain confidence in their use from what has been learnt from the Coastal Navigation..It’s Easy! program.
This section is a bonus section providing the students with some tips and tricks related to coastal navigation equipment and chart and how to look after and protect their equipment.
Finally in Section 14 we provide the answers to ‘The Cruise’ and give students the opportuniity to compare their answers with the correct answers.
