Welcome to the True North Marine Blog Page
After a fabulous career in the maritime industry of over 50 years I have now retired. Well, maybe semi-retired, (see profile below) as I still like to volunteer as a Marine Rescue Coxswain in Port Stephens NSW with Marine Rescue NSW.
This Blog Page has been created as I have learnt so much during my career that I wanted to pass some of the knowledge on (I was a maritime trainer for over 20 of those years). In addition, I am still learning, so, when I have something to share this blog gives me the forum to do that.
During my career I have worked on, and managed, many different types of vessels, performed many roles on deck, in the engineroom and on the bridge and in management roles. I have owned, maintained and sold commercial vessels.
Why am I telling you this? Well, having developed and used many marine products and resources I have realised that there are some very good one out there and some not so good. So, you will find information on these Blog Pages that may link you to some of the products and services that I have used or have come to know about.
Some of these links may take you to a third party website where I may receive a commission for any purchase you may make.
I am telling you this because when I was working I used to donate to 3 charities that are close to my heart:
-
-
-
-
The Fred Hollows Foundation,
-
The Deaf Society and
-
Movember, which supports mens’ health and cancer.
-

-
Please click on any of the links above for more information.
Even though I am now retired I would still like to donate to these organisations, if I can, so any commissions earned can be put towards these causes.

Marine radios operate differently from mobile phones, giving boat skippers the ability to call or contact multiple vessels at the same time. Therefore being able to correctly use a marine radio is a key safe boating component. Understanding how marine radios function, what channels to use and how to make Distress, Urgency, Safety and Routine calls is of paramount importance. A Marine Radio Licence is required by all Recreational and Commercial Skippers when operating marine radios.
