An MMSI number is not just another number to stick in the boat’s paperwork. It is the digital identity that allows your DSC radio or AIS equipment to identify your vessel quickly and accurately – particularly when routine communications turn into an emergency. What an MMSI number does
MMSI stands for Maritime Mobile Service Identity. It is a unique nine-digit number used by maritime communications equipment, including Digital Selective Calling (DSC) radios and AIS transponders.
On a DSC-equipped VHF, an MMSI lets you call another vessel or shore station directly without making an all-stations voice call. It also forms part of the distress alert sent when the red distress button is activated. If the radio is connected to GPS, that alert can include the vessel’s position and time.
On AIS, the MMSI identifies the vessel on other vessels’ electronic charts and AIS displays. First, establish the correct type of maritime ship station arrangement for your vessel and radio equipment. Program the number carefully

Radio competence still matters
Having the number is only one part of being ready to use modern marine communications. You should be comfortable with the difference between a distress, urgency and safety message; know how to make a routine DSC call; understand watchkeeping requirements; and be able to pass a clear voice message when electronic calling is unavailable.
